Welcome to the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) course, Professionalism in Patient Encounters.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the competency domain of professionalism and characterize the elements of professionalism that are prevalent during a physician-patient encounter
  • Identify the relationship between professional behaviors and patient care
  • Explain the difference between professionalism lapses and unprofessionalism during a patient encounter
  • Identify professionalism lapses in recorded interactions with simulated, or standardized, patients
  • Communicate feedback regarding professionalism lapses to guide a student or medical professional in improving their professionalism behaviors
