Medication Safety Communication OPAIM
The goal of the Medication Safety Communication OPAIM is to improve patient safety by enhancing physician-patient communication and to foster lifelong learning for osteopathic physicians.
Please Note: This course requires the use of anonymous patient data from your practice.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for osteopathic physicians and related health care professions. This OPAIM has been approved to satisfy AOA-BOS OCC Component 4 by the following Specialty Certifying Boards:
- American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology
- American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively at patient’s level of understanding
- Demonstrate effective techniques to improve communication
- Identify methods/techniques for more effective communication to improve medication adherence
- Identify methods/techniques for more effective communication to reduce adverse drug reactions
- Identify and implement continuous quality improvement (CQI) strategies for improving outcomes related to medication safety communication skills
Instructions for Participation and Credit
To successfully earn credit, participants must complete the program in its entirety. Follow these steps to earn OCC Component 4 and CME credit:
STAGE A: Assess Performance
Assess current practice using identified performance measures through a Patient Data Review:
- Select 10-30 patients based on the indicated parameters
- Enter and submit patient data
- Receive a performance analysis report comparing your performance with national benchmarks
STAGE B: Build and Implement Action Plan
Select from educational activities and practice improvement tools designed for sustained improvement in patient care:
- Identify an improvement goal and build an Action Plan using the activities and tools within the OPAIM module
- Complete the suggested educational activities and apply what you have learned in practice for a recommended 30 days
STAGE C: Reassess Performance
- Enter data from 10-30 additional patients seen since completion of Stage B
- Compare your Stage A and Stage C performance results
- Complete an evaluation on the OPAIM program
- Receive 20 credits of AOA Category 1-B Credit
