Case Development 101: Case Authoring

The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) has created Case Development 101: Case Authoring to provide training for osteopathic physicians and college of osteopathic medicine faculty to create realistic clinical cases for the purpose of assessment; either for summative evaluation in osteopathic medical school clinical training or high-stakes licensure examination, or for formative evaluation with performance feedback.

Target Audience

This course is intended for those writing case scenarios for standardized patient encounters.


Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what a case is
  • Describe what is included in a doctor patient encounter
  • Identify the components in a clinical case
  • Learn to incorporate elements of a patient presentation within a clinical encounter
  • Review the components of a case that include chief complaint, opening line, History of Present Illness, medical history and social history
  • Identify acceptable inclusion/exclusion criteria for the recruitment of an SP
  • Review best practices on the construction of an effective SP probe
  • Discuss how affect and simulation of physical findings are used to create a realistic patient simulation
